How to Create a Prayer Corner at Home

A prayer corner is a small, dedicated space in the home where a family can pause to pray. It does not need to be large or expensive. A shelf, a windowsill or a small table is enough. Having a place already set aside makes it easier to pray each day, because the corner itself reminds you.

Choose the spot

Pick somewhere quiet, away from the television and the clutter of daily life. A corner of the living room, a bedroom shelf or a hallway table all work well. If you have children, choose somewhere they can reach, so that the corner belongs to them too.

What to include

Keep it through the Church year

The corner can grow and change with the seasons. Use a purple cloth in Advent and Lent, white or gold at Christmas and Easter, and green in Ordinary Time. You might add a small crib in Advent, fresh flowers in May for Mary, and your beads out on the table in October. In November, a photograph of a loved one who has died is a lovely way to remember them, as we describe in All Souls’ Day: Remembering Those Who Have Died.

Making it a habit

  • Pray at the same time each day, even if only for a few minutes.
  • Keep it short: a Hail Mary, a decade of the Rosary or the Gospel of the day is plenty.
  • Let children light the candle and place a drawing or a note for someone they are praying for.
  • Keep a small notebook nearby for intentions and thanksgivings.

A prayer corner is not decoration. It is an invitation. On a busy day it may be the one still place in the house.

At Christmas, a candle in the window is a lovely addition. See The Christmas Candle in the Window.
